WASHINGTON, D.C. – Mike Kingsella, CEO of Up for Growth, issued the following statement today:

“Today’s bicameral agreement on the 21st Century ROAD to Housing Act moves the country to the doorstep of the most significant federal housing legislation in a generation. In a moment when Washington can’t seem to agree on much of anything, leaders in both parties and both chambers came together to deliver a serious response to housing unaffordability. We thank Senate Banking Chairman Tim Scott and Ranking Member Elizabeth Warren, and House Financial Services Chairman French Hill and Ranking Member Maxine Waters, for “for doing the hard, bicameral work that rarely makes headlines.

“The bill reflects a hard-won consensus: that easing the barriers to building, modernizing federal housing programs, and expanding the supply of homes are essential to bringing costs down. It gives communities more of the tools they need to make housing affordable and attainable, and it moves the country closer to a housing market that works for people rather than against them.

“But a bipartisan, bicameral bill of this scale doesn’t happen by accident. This progress belongs to our coalition that refused to let the housing crisis go unanswered: the builders, local leaders, researchers, and advocates who shared their data, told their communities’ stories, and kept the pressure on across party lines and through every turn of the process.

“The work isn’t finished. We urge both chambers to move swiftly to pass the 21st Century ROAD to Housing Act and send it to the President’s desk, proof that on the problems that touch us all, this country can still come together and act.”
