Today, 128 undersigned pro-housing organizations released the following joint statement on the Senate’s passage of the 21st Century ROAD to Housing Act:

“Today, the Senate delivered the most comprehensive response to America’s housing shortage in decades. The 21st Century ROAD to Housing Act shows that leaders in both parties recognize what families across the country are feeling every day: housing costs are too high, and the solution is to build more homes.

“The vast majority of this bill is exactly what the country needs. Its provisions to tie federal funding to housing production, incentivize local zoning reform, streamline outdated federal programs and regulations, and invest in new construction technologies represent a thoughtful, innovative approach to the supply crisis. We are proud to have worked closely with the Senate throughout this process and are eager to see these provisions become law.

“But we are deeply disappointed that Section 901 as passed would jeopardize the financial viability of building single-family rental homes – an important option for families – and in doing so, decrease the very housing supply this bill is trying to create. We are working with housing experts to assess the full extent of the policy’s impacts, but there is no reason a pro-housing bill should include a provision that reduces housing options for families. Left unaddressed, this section undermines the bill’s many other positive provisions.

“We are prepared to work with all lawmakers to fix Section 901 and ensure that every part of the package Congress sends to the President’s desk is working toward the same goal: more homes and lower costs for American families.”
